There are many reasons why you might be having trouble sleeping, but it’s not good to have a mattress which squeaks when you move. Some beds will squeak even if you are a restless sleeper. What are the causes of noisy beds and how can you fix them?
What causes a squeaky bed?
Replace your mattress or box spring
The squeaking may be caused by springs within the box spring. They could also be rubbing on other parts. You should not try to fix the internal springs. Purchase a new mattress or box spring.

Bed Parts Need Tightening
Metal or wooden bedframes loosen with time, or were never properly tightened. The majority of bed squeaks can be eliminated by tightening the parts.
Bed parts need lubrication
Even after the bed frame components have been tightened, they may still rub against one another. The components will continue to move against one another after lubrication. However, the friction is reduced enough so that the squeaks are either eliminated or quietened.
Tip
Only use dry lubricant. This spray lubricant is applied wet, but it dries in seconds. It leaves a dry lubricating layer that’s safe to use on furniture. It won’t drip on your floor.
Wood Bed Parts Need Felt Tape
Two stringers rails are often used in wood beds to connect the headboard and footboard. Metal hooks are attached to the ends of the stringers and fit into slots in the headboard or footboard.
The squeaking is caused by the stringers rubbing against the headboard or footboard when the bed is under stress. Add self-adhesive tape between the head or footboards and the stringers to eliminate these squeaks.
Box Springs Need Padding
Squeaking may be caused by the box spring moving against the inner side of the bed frame. A cushion placed between the two components can help to reduce noise.
What you’ll need
Equipment and Tools
- Allen wrench set
- Wrench set
- Cordless drill
- Drill driver bits
- Rubber mallet
- Scissors
Materials
- Dry Lubricant
- Self-adhesive felt tape
- Four pieces of 3/4-inch by 6-foot semi-slit foam polyethylene pipe insulation

The source of bed squeaks can be identified
You can eliminate the cause of the noise by disassembling the mattress.
-
- Remove all bedding and pillows.
- Remove the Mattress from the boxspring and place it directly on the floor.
- Place the boxspring on the floor near the mattress after removing it from the frame.
- Roll over the mattress a few times and check if it is noisy.
- The same as with the mattress, spread a blanket over the box spring and then lie on it.
Replace the mattress or boxspring if either squeaks.
You can move on to other options if neither the mattress or box spring makes a noise.

Lubricate Bed Parts
Lubricate bed parts before tightening. Dry lubricant works well on metal and wooden surfaces.
-
- Shake well the can.
- Spray the product briefly onto a piece cardboard to ensure that the product is moving through the nozzle.
- Spray on both metal and wood parts in contact.
- Allow the glue to dry for a few moments before assembling it again.
Try tightening up the bed frame if the bed continues to squeak.

How to tighten bed parts
Fasteners for metal and wood frames can include bolts, Allen screws or cam screws.
Tighten the fasteners using the correct tool. Do not worry if the fasteners feel loose.
Over-tightening can cause metal bed frames to bend. Over-tightening can cause some metal bed frames to bend. Wooden components may become stripped of their holes.
If that doesn’t work, you can try adding felt tape and padding.

How to add Felt Tape on a Bed Frame
- Tap the stringer rails upwards from the bottom. Use a rubber mallet.
- Add a small strip of felt tape to one of the ends of the stringer (where the metal hook can be found). Repeat the process at the opposite end of the stringer.
- Repeat the felt tape onto the second stringer.
- Unscrew the bed slats.
- Add felt tape to the ends of each slat, at the point where they touch the bed frame.
- Replace the slats and screw them firmly into place.
- Install the metal hooks of the stringers into the slots and then force the stringers downward.

How to add padding around a bed frame
- Cut two pieces of foam pipe insulation the width of your bed using scissors. Measuring from inside the bed, after removing the mattress and boxspring, is the best way to do it.
- Replace your mattress and box spring.
- Between the box springs and the headboard, cut a piece of Force One.
- The second cut piece should be inserted between the boxspring and the footboard.
- Two full-length pipe insulation pieces should be pushed along the side of the boxspring.
-
Tip
You can cut the insulation in half lengthwise if it is too thick. The insulation has already been slit. Just cut the other half to make two halves.
