Have you ever looked at a design in a room and wondered what is exactly that makes it so effective? We at EHD like to explain why certain rooms are so appealing to us. It’s an art to create a beautiful and cohesive space, but it is possible if you have the knowledge and determination to pull it off.

Dee Murphy told us that her bedroom had received a great deal of attention via Instagram when she pitched it to us. We were not surprised and realized that this bedroom is an excellent example of a room that meets all the criteria. We thought it would be fun to share her beautiful bedroom with you today and show you how you can create your dream bedroom.

1. Color Palette – Calm, but not boring

You’ve probably been reading this blog for some time and know how loves to emphasize the importance of a coherent color palette. It is important, folks. You’ll find it easier to choose textiles, art and decor when you have a color scheme in mind. If you’re starting a new room design, start with a color scheme. Here’s how:

  1. Choose the color that you like most.
  2. Use different shades of this color to decorate your home
  3. Combining cool and warm colors will give you a balanced appearance
  4. Choose an accent color that is the exact opposite of your main colour.

The dark blue walls in this bedroom set the mood, and the different shades of blue you can see on the textiles and rugs. Burnt orange accents are seen in the bedding, decor and accents. A mixture of wood tones with brass accents completes the look. Emily has written a detailed article about choosing a color scheme .

2. FLORAL MIXING

When done correctly, floral patterns are a great way to make an impact. You should also vary the scale of patterns when mixing florals. The floral curtains in this picture are the main attraction, but if we look closely, we can also see that the quilt is floral. The curtain pattern is also much larger than the quilt pattern. Both patterns work well together, as the quilt color is a variation of one of the curtain colors. Another example of the power of sticking to a color palette.

Dee complements her floral patterns by adding natural floral arrangements to highlight the accent colours she wants throughout the room.

3. The Art of Collecting

They are also often very personal, so they can add a special touch to any space. It’s possible that you already have a collection and are unaware of it. Consider things you own in multiples, e.g. Hats, small lidded box, figurines or variations of the same art genre. Place them close to each other in order to create a focal point.

If you are thinking about creating a collection, ensure that the items in it are similar but not identical. If you want to create a collection, it should not be the exact same thing. However, they should all fall into the same category. If you want to display a group of vessels, you should make sure that they are all different in terms of size, height and shape.

Dee’s collection is an excellent example. She arranged the drawings around the focal point (the bedframe) to make them instantly noticeable. They are similar enough that they feel like a group, but each one is unique.

4. Mix of High and Low

The classic EHD rule is that pretty looks great with pretty. You can style a high-end bedside table with a vase that costs $10 and thrifted candles. You also want a mix between high-end and low-end pieces so that your room does not end up looking too stuffy. You can save money by using high-end pieces to make affordable pieces look expensive. Finding cheap finds can be fun, and the price doesn’t matter as long as everything works together.

5. Mix of Vintage and Modern

Mixing vintage and modern pieces will never make your room feel “catalogue”. Vintage and thrifted items will give your room a unique and eclectic feel. The newer products are able to elevate and complement the more unique and exciting pieces.

Dee’s decor is a mix of vintage and thrifted pieces, but the majority are new. The quilt, bed, curtains, sconces and nightstands are all new, while the rest is a mix of found items. The mix of old and new makes the room feel curated and special.

You’re done. Here are 5 easy and quick steps you can use to design your own bedroom. You’ve come this far and deserve a surprise.

How cute. Because I am nosy, I would love to know your favorite part about this room. ?
